After Prince Jayasena expresses disbelief about the possibility of attaining unification of mind, the Buddha explains why a life of sensual pleasure blinds one to spiritual truths using two vivid similes. He then uses an analogy of taming a wild elephant, showing how training and renunciation lead to true mastery.

The Buddha teaches about the person who has had “a single auspicious night”. One who neither revives the past nor places hope in the future, but diligently discerns present phenomena with insight—without taking them as self, and practices with urgency today without being carried away by presently arisen phenomena, that wise one is one who has had a single auspicious night.

Using the role of food as nutriment that sustains and endures the body, the Buddha describes the nutriments for the arising and growth of the five hindrances and the seven factors of awakening.

Through a parable of an acrobat and his apprentice, the Buddha teaches that protecting oneself through mindfulness also protects others, and vice versa. Self-discipline through mindfulness leads to communal safety, while patience and compassion for others strengthens one’s own path. True protection begins with personal responsibility in Dhamma.

The Buddha shares the four training guidelines of: 1) accomplishment in virtue, 2) guarding the doors of the sense faculties, 3) observing moderation in eating, and 4) practicing wakefulness, that when undertaken with diligence and cultivated as qualities, lead to non-decline and brings one near to Nibbāna.

The Buddha explains how to cultivate recollection of death so that it is of great fruit and great benefit, and leads to the deathless.

When asked about the state of peace and the way of practice to reach it, the Buddha describes this state as being steady and unruffled, like the middle of the ocean where no wave arises. He then shares the way of practice to achieve it without delay: guarding the senses, letting go of indulgence, to be a meditator who cultivates wakefulness, and through investigation, abandoning a host of unwholesome qualities.

Venerable Sāriputta inquires of the Buddha about how a bhikkhu dwelling in solitude should deal with various challenges and cultivate the path. The Buddha delivers a complete guide for dispelling the darkness, moving from withstanding hardships to dispelling ‘distressing thoughts’ and ultimately purifying the mind from the ‘five kinds of dust.’

When the venerable Nanda is dissatisfied with the spiritual life due to thoughts of a beautiful woman, the Buddha takes him to the realm of the gods and shows him celestial nymphs far more beautiful. Delighted, Nanda consents to continue leading the spiritual life, but is soon mocked by his companions as a ‘wage labourer’ and a ‘bought man.’ Stung by shame, he turns to earnest practice, and before long realizes the perfection of the spiritual life.

The Buddha finds Anuruddha, Nandiya, and Kimbila living in exemplary harmony—goodwill in body, speech, and mind; shared duties; noble silence; and an all-night Dhamma discussion every fifth day. They can enter the four jhānas and the formless attainments at will, culminating in the exhaustion of the mental defilements from having seen with wisdom.

The Buddha answers the questions of the reputed brahmin Caṅkī's learned student, who asks the Buddha on how there is preservation of truth, awakening to the truth, final arrival at the truth, and what is most helpful for the final arrival at the truth.

A person who is lacking continuous effort and is without concern is incapable of attaining full awakening, Nibbāna, and the unsurpassed safety from bondage.

A bhikkhu endowed with two qualities of being moved on occasions that inspire a sense of urgency and by wisely striving when aroused with urgency, dwells in the here and now with abundant ease and joy, and his mind is directed towards the wearing away of the mental defilements.

The Buddha describes the fires of passion, hatred, and delusion which consume beings who cling to a self. The wise cool these flames with wisdom, loving-kindness, and perceiving unattractiveness.

DhammaPada verses 21-32 share the distinct path and outcomes of diligence and negligence. On seeing this clearly, the wise guard diligence like the most important wealth. One devoted to diligence burns away all fetters, is incapable of decline, and is near to Nibbāna.

Dhammapada verses 221-234 emphasize abandoning anger, conceit, and mental defilements while cultivating restraint in body, speech, and mind. The verses highlight overcoming harmful actions by giving and speaking truth, the inevitability of criticism, and the value of moral discipline. Those intent on Nibbāna, ever watchful, and well-restrained are beyond reproach and honored even by the gods.

Dhammapada verses 360–382 depict the ideal bhikkhu as one who restrains the senses, body, speech, and mind, leading to freedom from suffering. Emphasis is placed on mindfulness, inner joy, collectedness, and self-reliance. Through discipline and reflection, the bhikkhu advances towards the peace of Nibbāna, shining like the moon freed from clouds.

Dhammapada verses 383–423 redefine ‘Brāhmaṇa’ (sage) by inner attainment, not birth or appearance. Through effort, a true sage cuts craving, understands reality, and realizes Nibbāna. Fearless, detached, pure, and restrained, they embody non-violence and patience. Free from defilements and attachments, having overcome suffering and rebirth, the sage achieves the ultimate goal, radiating wisdom and peace.
